"...making a significant statement. It reminds me of what the Ojai Festival was before it became famous."

“one of the area's most innovative music showcases”

"Founded and nimbly run by young composer-violinist Matt McBane, the festival provides a fresh West Coast forum for new music, commissioned, performed and served up with seriousness as well as audience accessibility.”

“…magnificently enlightening…”

“Carlsbad exemplifies the way a young generation of composers rethink accepted musical pigeonholes—classical versus pop, chamber versus orchestral, harmony versus noise—that fogeys like me once held sacred."

The Carlsbad Music Festival: Contemporary. Classical. Cutting Edge.

Not every beautiful beach town offers world-class contemporary chamber music by some of the nation’s most exciting young musicians. Or the opportunity for audience members to mingle with them at workshops, lecture-demonstrations, interviews and receptions. But when two of the founders are hometown boys like Artistic Director Matt McBane and Calder Quartet violinist Ben Jacobson, Carlsbad’s natural friendliness is bound to influence the proceedings.

And so the Carlsbad Music Festival enters its sixth year, with another superb creative program that features the cele- brated electronic quintet, California E.A.R. Unit; famed composer/guitarist, Fred Frith; and the Festival’s Founding Ensemble, the Calder Quartet. The Festival will also present world premieres written for the resident ensembles by McBane, competi- tion winner Daniel Wohl and others, and collaborative performances among the groups.

The Cultural Arts Office is a presenting partner of the Festival, which is also made possible in part by the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation’s Robert H. Gartner Cultural Endowment Fund. This is the direction of classical chamber music today, so make sure you have your seat for this exciting series of concerts – presented right here in Carlsbad.
