2nd Annual Carlsbad Music Festival Composers Competition
The Carlsbad Music Festival, in partnership with its Founding Ensemble-in-Residence, the Calder Quartet, announces its 2nd Annual Composers Competition. Last year’s competition was a tremendous success with the winner, Ryan Carter (link to www.ryancarter.org), selected amongst over fifty applicants from the US, Mexico and Europe for a commission to write his well-received grip. This year the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation has significantly raised its support of the competition. Please see the below posting for application information:
Postmark deadline: November 17, 2006
The Carlsbad Music Festival, in partnership with its Founding Ensemble-in-Residence, the Calder Quartet, announces its second annual composition competition with a prize of $3,000. The festival and quartet seek to commission a new 15-30 minute string quartet from a highly original, creative, and compelling composer under the age of 35. The winning composition will be premiered at the 4th annual Carlsbad Music Festival on the weekend of September 28-30, 2007.
The $3,000 prize includes the commission fee and travel stipend, free room during residency (home-stay), a professional recording of the premiere, and the possibility of future performances by the Calder Quartet.
Please submit a score and recording (MIDI mock-ups are discouraged) of two recent pieces, at least one using violin, viola or cello in a chamber music setting. Please also include the following materials and information: your name, birthday, address, phone number, e-mail address, web site (if available), artistic biography or resume, list of works, a $20 check made payable to “Carlsbad Music Festival,” a SASE if you would like your materials returned (unreturned materials will be recycled), and an optional project proposal or cover letter. All competition materials must be postmarked by November 15, 2006. The winner will be notified in January 2007. The winner’s completed score and parts must be delivered to the music festival by July 1, 2007 and the winner must attend the concerts on September 28-30, 2007.
The Carlsbad Music Festival is an annual weeklong festival featuring cutting-edge, world-class young musicians performing adventurous music in concert and in the community. The festival generates great press, and draws large and enthusiastic audiences to its concerts in the coastal California city of Carlsbad. The Calder Quartet continues to explore and push the boundaries of chamber music with a keen acumen for combining the best of the traditional and the avant-garde. Critically praised for its “splendor and substance,” the group highlights its 2006-07 season as the Juilliard School’s Graduate Resident Quartet, one of the school’s highest distinctions, and also continues its relationship with the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where they participate in the Colburn Chamber Artists Series of concerts and outreach events. The winner of the competition will be decided jointly by the festival’s founder/director, Matt McBane, and the Calder Quartet.
The 2007 Carlsbad Music Festival Composers Competition is made possible in part by a generous donation from the Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation.
